Further out of the city is the Quays development (properly in Salford) on the Ship Canal. This was once a wasteland of empty docks and disused spaces. Over the last 20 years or so it has been transformed into a site for working, eating, culture and shopping. The architectural styles are modern, innovative and impressive and buildings are alongside the old docks . Here you will find the Lowry Centre dedicated to, and containing, Salford's collection of pictures by LS Lowry. It also houses galleries for temporary exhibitions, a theatre, restaurant and bar. On the other side of the canal is the iconic Imperial War Museum of the North, seen in all its architectural splendour from the Lowry side of the canal.
